Privacy notice

The Mauritius Scout Association is the controller of the personal data described here. We are incorporated under the Mauritius Scout Act 1976 and based at Baden Powell House, Trianon, Quatre Bornes, Mauritius.

We process personal data in line with the Data Protection Act 2017 (Act 20 of 2017), which came into force on 15 January 2018 and is enforced by the Data Protection Office of Mauritius. The Act follows the same principles as the EU General Data Protection Regulation: we collect only what we need, use it only for the purpose we collected it for, keep it accurate, and protect it.

If you contact us

Our enquiry and registration forms collect your name, email address, telephone number, the region or topic you selected, and whatever you write in the message. We use this to answer you and, where relevant, to put you in touch with a Scout group near you.

If you hold a member account

A member account stores your name, email address, telephone number, your section, your region and your Scout group, together with an encrypted form of your password. We never store your password itself.

If you register a young person

A Scout profile added by a parent or guardian holds the young person’s full name, date of birth, section and Scout group, plus any notes the parent chooses to add — for example a medical or dietary need. This is children’s data and we treat it accordingly: it is visible only to the parent or guardian who created it and to the MSA staff who need it to run Scouting safely.

Separately, photographs and video of young people are only used with consent, collected through our Media & Photography Consent Form.

If you record an activity or award

Members can log activities and award claims through the portal. These records hold the title, year, location and details you enter, the name of the young person the claim is for, and the account that submitted it.

When staff edit the site

Changes made in the content manager are recorded in an audit log with the email address of the staff account that made them. This is an internal accountability record and is not visible outside MSA.

This site sets one cookie, named payload-token. It is what keeps you signed in to your member account or the content manager, and it is set only once you log in. Without it, logging in would not work.

We run no analytics, no advertising trackers and no third-party cookies. Nothing on this site follows you elsewhere, and there is nothing to opt out of.

Your browser also stores one preference locally — whether you chose the light or dark theme. It never leaves your device and is not sent to us. Clearing your browser storage removes it.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for marketing. We share it only where it is needed to run Scouting — for example passing an enquiry to the Scout group nearest you, or to the relevant District Commissioner — or where we are required to by law, including our child protection obligations described on the safeguarding page.

The site and its database run on infrastructure operated on MSA’s behalf. Those providers process data on our instructions only.

We keep personal data for as long as it is needed for the purpose it was collected for, and then delete it. Enquiries are kept while we deal with them and for a reasonable period after. Membership and Scout profile records are kept for as long as the membership is active, and afterwards only where a record must be retained — for example a safeguarding record, which is governed by our child protection obligations rather than by preference.

Under the Data Protection Act 2017 you may ask us to:

• confirm what personal data we hold about you, and give you a copy;
• correct anything inaccurate or incomplete;
• delete data we no longer have a reason to keep;
• restrict or object to how we are using it; and
• not be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing. We do not make any such decisions.

Write to msa.admin@scoutsmauritius.org and we will respond. If you are not satisfied with how we have handled it, you have the right to complain to the Data Protection Commissioner at the Data Protection Office, who is independent of MSA and of any other authority.
