Accessibility

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. This is a self-assessment by the team who build the site, not an independent audit, and we would rather say so than imply a certification we do not hold.

• Keyboard navigation.Every interactive part of the site can be reached and operated without a mouse, and a “Skip to content” link at the top of each page lets you jump past the navigation.
• Screen readers. Pages use real headings, lists, tables and landmarks rather than styled text, so a screen reader can announce the structure and move through it.
• Images. Photographs carry alternative text, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers so they do not add noise.
• Contrast and colour. Text is checked against its background for AA contrast, and colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
• Light and dark.Where MSA has enabled the theme switcher, the site follows your device’s light or dark preference. Otherwise it stays in its light theme, which meets the same contrast requirements.
• Zoom and small screens. The layout reflows down to a phone and up to 200% zoom without content being cut off or requiring sideways scrolling.
• Motion.Animation is limited, and respects a system “reduce motion” setting.

These are genuine barriers we have not fixed yet:

• The group finder map. The interactive map on the regions pages is built on a third-party mapping library and is difficult to use with a keyboard or a screen reader. The same information — every region and the groups within it — is available as ordinary text and links on the same pages, and that route is fully accessible.
• Policy documents. Many of the PDFs on our documents page were scanned from paper or produced before accessibility was considered. They are not tagged, and some are images of text that a screen reader cannot read at all. We are replacing them as documents are reissued. If you need one of them in an accessible format, ask us and we will provide it.
• Older migrated content. Some pages carried over from our previous website still contain tables or formatting that do not follow the structure we now use.
• Embedded video. Videos hosted on third-party platforms depend on captions provided at the source, and not all of them have accurate captions.
